Prince
Prince was never intended for the rescue program. When he arrived, it was as a courtesy to the municipal animal shelter. We were to foster him for them until he recovered from a bad bout of kennel cough, at which time they were going to neuter and vaccinate him and place him through their own adoption program.
When the day came for Prince to return to the City, he still had not recovered from his kennel cough. In fact, we suspected that he had other problems and that those were why he was having such a hard time shaking his kennel cough. After talking with the City, it was determined that Prince should not return to the shelter as scheduled. I told them that if they would release him to me as a rescue, I would put the full resources of the organization behind finding out what was causing him to not recover from his kennel cough, as well as handling the vaccines, neuter, etc. that would be required to place him.
Prince DID recover, eventually. During the time in our foster care, he was just the most loyal and loving little boy anyone ever met. Unfortunately, I was the only "anyone" he had ever met. Not wanting to endanger the pets of any of the foster homes, I took Prince on as my own foster dog and this led to an unfortunate hole in our knowledge of him. Prince hates women.
Yes, Prince hates women. As quickly as he would turn over and offer up his tummy for a man, he would bite a woman without warning. Prince' only options became euthanasia, or sanctuary. I chose sanctuary. One of the volunteers (a woman, natch) feels that she can rehabilitate him and wants the opportunity to try. He's such a sweet and loving dog, except for this one trait, that I can't deny her the chance. And while she's made tremendous progress with him, that progress is, unfortunately, inconsistant.
Prince will not be leaving the care of his foster daddy, the only person who would tolerate the occasional bite in exchange for the love he gives unconditionally the other 99.999999999 percent of the time. He's well loved and will be cared for for the balance of his life, but he'll never have a "forever home".
