My name is Patti and for many years I was hoping to get another dachshund after my Cuddles past away when I was a child. After looking for a dachshund in our local paper and being told that the lady decided to give him to someone else in her home town, I decided to try another avenue.
On April 30, 1998 I went in search of a dachshund on the internet. It was then I came across the Dachshund Rescue Web Page. There were 11 dachshunds listed. I reviewed them all and their location. I decided that "Mickey" who was listed under the "California" listing was to be my next dachshund. The one obstacle was that I live in Michigan. It took a few weeks to arrange transport for Mickey, but with help from Benny and his endless devotion for Dachshunds and Lisa at the Dachshund Underground Railroad and all of her contacts, Mickey was "home" on May 12, 1998.
Mickey was twenty one and a half months old when he arrived here at his forever home. When he first arrived he couldn't stand the sight of anyone that was of the male gender - not even my husband. He wanted to chew his ankles off! It took three weeks of "midnight snacking" with "dad" before he began to feel comfortable and that he would not be abused by anyone ever again. We live on a 26 acre mini-hobby farm with chickens, goats, rabbits, a cat and three children (all teens). Mickey has slipped out of his collar a few times and has caught a chicken (but he couldn't decide between original and extra crispy) and came REAL close to one of the bunnies. He is currently on a diet as he will steal anything he can get his mouth on - especially pizza. He is a joy to have and I am glad to have adopted Mickey, (or should I say HE adopted ME?)
