Try an Adult Dog!

I have not adopted a dog from the Dachshund Rescue page, but I have adopted two in the past. In the spring of 1989 our family adopted our first dog. His name was Webb and he was 6 years old. The lady he was living with was working all day and could not be home for him. She was selling her house (my parents were looking to buy it) and moving into an apartment. My parents were the only people he did not bark at that day and they fell in love with him. A couple of weeks later he came home to stay with us. He had been abused by a man by the owner who had him before the lady we adopted him from and was not social with other dogs at all. He adjusted to our family and soon cherished the role of guardian of the yard, chasing all squirrells out with a determination I have never seen with any other dog. We enjoyed our time wiith him for many years until he was 17. He became blind and deaf and his epilepsy worsened and one very sad day he passed on. We were heartbroken.
About a month ago I received a call from my Dad about a woman at his work who was giving up her dachshund because she was working too much. I immediatly knew he was meant for us. My daughter and I went and picked him up for what she thought was a trial period and he stayed to became one of the family. He loves attention and will follow me around the house all day long. He loves to play fetch with his ball and hang out in the front yard (but only when its not raining). He is wonderful with my daughter, even when she wants to give him a bit too much attention. She is used to being around a much larger dog, and is adjusting to a smaller breed. They love to snuggle on the couch while watching TV or coloring and enjoy exploring the wilder areas of the yard together.
I would definatly recomend adopting a senior dog. They are wonderful companions and have years left to enjoy. I have never owned a puppy but I have not missed out on having a wonderful friend with either of my dogs.
