Sweetheart

Sweetheart came to the rescue from our municipal shelter. She was picked up as either stray, or abandoned (they couldn't say which) with a "friend", another dachshund whom they suspect was her offspring. Because he was not as old as Sweetheart clearly is, they decided to give him a chance for placement through their own adoptions program. Sweethearts only options were rescue or, failing that, euthanasia.

Even though Sweetheart is (as of this writing) listed on our adoptable dachshunds page, I have no illusions about her chances for finding a new home. She's an older girl and while I know that she isn't going to keel over dead tomorrow, I also know that most people won't even consider an older dog for exactly that fear. It's a common problem that all breed rescuers have. Wonderful dogs who will never find a "forever" home because they are seniors.

So, even knowing that she had absolutely no chance of leaving rescue, Sweetheart was welcomed here with open arms and heart. She will be safe until her time to pass to the Rainbow Bridge comes and I know that she's going to take a large part of my heart with her when she goes. I often tell people that I have a large, soft spot in my heart for the seniors, specifically so that they can take it with them when they leave.

I read every story here and

I read every story here and I am balling my eyes out. Thank you for doing such great work! Every dog should have the love you provide your rescues. I do not own a dox, my best friend does and Im shopping for her x-mas present. I like to make sure whatever I get her also benefits an animal. We have two labs and a rescue we just took in and I wish everyone would take a chance on an animal that isnt a puppy. Our rescue came to us not knowing what a toy is, not trusting enough to take treats from a human hand, and never having barked before. I was told he had bad social skills. In a few days, a dog that was in danger of euthanasia because of his "problems socializing" has given me a new lease on life and is a core member of my family. He plays non-stop, licks my hands, takes treats and has found his voice! Dogs will reflect the love and care you give them. I hope people stop looking for the ideal young well-behaved, loving dog.

Benny,
You are an incredible human being! The love and respect that you show to the senior dogs is amazing! It's too bad that there are not more people in this world willing to take a chance on senior dogs. Our 12 year old doxie, Buster, is the light of my life! We treat him just as we treat our 6 yr old doxie, with lots of love and respect. His age just makes him wiser! Thank you for your dedication to the breed of dogs we love best!!

Benny, Sweetheart is a Sweetheart. The tears are flowing for her. I have three little ladies of my own and I wouldn't trade the world for them. It breaks my heart to hear of these animals and their situations due to the environment thay are in. I wish I could afford to take all the Dachshunds in the world. They are the most wonderful pets. Someday I hope to have a place on a farm to where I can rescue these little girls and boys and believe you me they won't be adopted out. My home will be their "forever home". Thanks for your love and support of these little guys and gals.

What incredible stories. I

What incredible stories. I have a 13 year old doxie who is diabetic and blind. He's my baby and I can't imagine life without him in it. I hope to adopt another doxie someday. It's a wonderful thing you do for these forgotten angels. The love and concern you show them is truly inspiring.

Hi Benny. This is Cindy

Hi Benny. This is Cindy from New York State. I am the person who has Scooter. His beautiful red coat is lighter, turning gray/white. But he is still a lovebug and going strong. He sleeps with my daughter every night and is such a happy boy. We all love him!! I just have to say that we love seniors too!!! Our Fred dog turned 14 last December and Ellie is 13 now. I told my hubby that we should open a Senior Citizen Home for Dachshunds. He can't stand it when people just give their dogs away when they reach a certain age... can't understand it. There are elderly people that can't stay in their own homes any longer but you would think their families would take care of their pets for them. It is so sad when they won't. You are a good man Benny. Keep up the good work.

Sometime today, October 17,

Sometime today, October 17, 2008, Sweetheart left for the Rainbow Bridge.

She lived her life to the fullest, right to the very end. Her day began, as it has ever since she arrived, with breakfast, eaten with as much gusto as she could give it. And then, sometime between 4:20 a.m. and 3:40 p.m., she passed away.

Sweethearts true age was never known, but it was suspected she was between 14 and 15 when she arrived in May of 2007. Possibly a bit older. And, as with all the senior dachshunds who never made it out of rescue, I look back now and I have difficulty remembering a time when she wasn't here.

She will be missed.

Benny

I am so sad to hear that,

I am so sad to hear that, thank you for giving her a wonderful life.

How I Wish My Liesl Lived To

How I Wish My Liesl Lived To Be An Elderly doxie. I would give anything to have her in my life again. She had to leave us at the tender age of 5 after undergoing two spinal surgeries in less than a week. After two month of our rehabbing her lovingly at home, her back went out again. We made the gut-wrenching decision to euthanize her and carry her pain in our heart forever. It is only a little over a year but it feels like yesterday. How can people so callously discard their pets. If I had her back I would hold her in my arms forever.

Dear Benny, Sweetheart

Dear Benny,

Sweetheart reminds me so much of my "Heidi". Heidi could also sit up like sweetheart does, had the same coloring.
I know exacty how you feel, when you feel no one would love & take care of Sweetheart as well as you can. I felt the same way about my Heidi. I lived alone for 10 yrs. after my husband passed away and worried about my two dogs. I worried, if something happened to me, what would become of my babies. Both older, my family liked them but not enough to take them in.
My Heidi did pass quietly the day after my B'day this last July. She was 18 yrs young. the love of my life.
She came to me as a gift from my husband when she was only 7 weeks old. Since then, my husband brought me Skippy. Two yrs. later my boy of 8 wks. came along. I have loved these dogs almost as much as our own Son. God forgive me if that is wrong to say. No one but a true dog lover can understand what I'm saying. My son has let me down from time to time and I love him very much but never have I felt that way about my dogs. They were there through all my trials, all my good times and tears. I find that Skippy now is very lonely since his sister passed I want to adopt another dog. Is Sweetheart still available?
What is her age?
I am 54 yrs. old. I remarried this last Oct. to a wonderful man who also loves animals. We have a beauitful home in Tucson,Az with a beautiful grassed yard and doggie door. We go for short walks each night after dinner and Skippy would love to have the company during the day while mom & dad are away. I promise she will never want for anything.
Please write me @ Schulzeqt@yahoo.com
Thank you for your wonderful heart and all your hard work.
How wonderful this world would be if we had many more people like you.
GOD BLESS YOU, and all that follow in your work.

Dear Benny, I am so sorry, I

Dear Benny,

I am so sorry, I am also sorry I didn't read futher down to see that Sweetheart had already passed. She now is at peace and is playing and romping with all those that have gone before her.
Benny- THANK YOU for all you've done to make Sweetheart happy and loved in her final months.
You will surely be rewarded for the love you share.
If you read this and have a dachshund that likes other dogs, remember I still have Skippy who still misses his sister. Skippy is 16 yrs. now but still loves to play and cuddling is still the best activity around.
My e-mail address is above.
My name is Sandy
God Bless You! & have a Happy New Year

Trying to hold back the

Trying to hold back the tears. That is very sad. The thing is, regardless of age, dachshunds are cute! People cannot usually tell how old a dog is until they see the records. I am sorry for your loss!

We lost our Cindy-Weiner in 2003 and I would love to see her again, but I know she is in a better place and in a new little body, without all the pain she went thru. I also know that she knew she was loved.

I have just lost one of my girls to cancer . She was 16 yrs old. The light of my life. I have submitted an application to adopt and stated I wanted a young dog but after reading these entries I have decided to avail my home and my heart to seniors. Phyllis Brand

On October 17th, it will have been two years since she left me to await my arrival at Rainbow Bridge. I miss her terribly.

You are the most amazing person and I know you will be forever loved for your work with these precious animals that cannot help themselves. Bless you for being there.

I lost my beloved Duchess

I lost my beloved Duchess this week after almost 14 years of loving companionship. Eight years ago I accepted a teaching position in Kuwait and brought her with me. Although going potty in the sand rather than the grass was a bit of an adjustment for her, she seemed happy to be with me. Living in the Middle East was an adjustment for me too and having my precious Baby Dog as I often called her made the transition easier. I feel blessed and grateful to have had her in my life as long as I did. Duchess was just 4 weeks old when my daughter (who was in the 8th grade at the time and is now 28) picked her out as "the one" she wanted when Duchess would be weaned and ready to come live with us. It seems like so long ago. The kids grew up (my son was a senior in high school when Duchess came to live with us...he'll be 32 this year) and moved out, but I always had my Baby Dog. She was my family. She slept with me and it was such a comfort to stroke her little head and feel her soft fur as I drifted off to sleep or woke in the night. Now my heart is breaking because my dear little friend is gone. As I go through the grieving process I am comforted in knowing that she'll be waiting for me when I cross over. When I am ready, perhaps there will be another dashie that I can love on and spoil. My question here is, "Is it possible to give an older mini-Dachshund a forever home from this site knowing that she would have to accompany me back to Kuwait?" I travel home to the States every summer and stay with my sister who lives outside of the Sacramento area. Thanks for all you do for these wonderful little doggies.
