Sam's Story

Sam's Story!
Merry Christmas to me, I got a new home.
Hi, my name is Sam, and I have retired to Florida, I am 10 years old. I was found roaming in Illinois and was turned over to rescue and I went to live with some wonderful people in Jasper, Alabama. They loved me and took good care of me. No one wanted an older dog so they thought they would have me for life. But that was OK, because they loved me because I'm such a "great old man" as my foster mom would say.
But one day, a really nice lady looking for an older dachshund that was cat friendly found out about me. It turns out she wanted an older dog because she new of the advantages of us. We are usually housebroken, laid back and mild. As luck would have it, Sam was one of the names she had picked if she were to get an un-named dog. Its sort of a family name. I'm also cat friendly.
Well my moms wrote a lot of e-mail (still do) to make sure this was the right move. After all my foster mom loved me to pieces, but she does have 5 other dogs. I would be an only dog (yeah, no competition for food or love). They also talked on the phone. They agreed to meet at the Dachshund Picnic in Lakeland, Florida. That is where I finally got to meet my new forever mom.
The ride home was pretty quiet. Almost three hours in the car. But I enjoyed the ride on my Aunt Kelly's lap or in the back seat on my blankie.
I've been in my new forever home for about 3 weeks now and love every minute. I get to go for rides. Everyone at the local pet store loves me, and everytime we go there I get lots of attention. You see the pet store doesn't sell dogs (YEAH!!). There I met my cousin Ginger. She is a Golden Retriever. I will probably stay with her if my mom and dad go on vacation. I also have an Aunt Amanda and a cousin Willie, he's a beagle. My mom only works part time so we spend a lot of time together, which I love. We go for walks, and I'm waiting for my area of the back yard to be fenced. I much prefer however to walk my mom.
Well that's all for now, my mom took pictures of me wearing my Christmas bandanna and my new sweater but they haven't been developed yet. I'll send them soon.

Update: January 16, 2004
I thought you might want to know that "Sam" from your Adoptions Stories page has gone on to the Rainbow Bridge. He could no longer fight the congestive heart failure and died in the arms of his "dad". They were 2 of the best years of our life together. We will miss him terribly.

The Dachshund Rescue Web Page would like to offer our sincerest condolances to his family and our gratitude to them for making his final years wonderful. We know that Sam will be missed and are sure that when the time comes, it is the Gemblin's that Sam will cross the Rainbow Bridge with.

I am a proud Daschund mommy
I am a proud Daschund mommy who had to let my precious Harley go after becoming too weak to care for him due to cancer. He went to a great family and has his own little girl he sleeps with every night. Human and his doggie girlfriend Daisy. LOL I read your story and wanted to offer my condolences. I believe "All Dogs go to Heaven" and provided I make it I will be sure to let Sam know how much he is missed.
