George's Story

George's Story!
Hi,
My name is Wanda Fischer, and I have been a dachshund person since I was in high school., many, many moons ago.
My father brought Fritz into our lives in the late 1960s. I remember sleeping with him all night as he cried because he missed his mother. He slept close to my shoulder all night.
Then when I went out on my own, I had Schlagel, a wonderful half-wirehaired, half smooth standard who was my best friend for 14 years.
I rescued Digger from a person who had bought him at a pet store, then I rescued Mandy, who was the love of my life (with all apologies to my husband). She slipped a disc and went into heart failure from lack of exercise after a year on a K-9 cart, which she hated. My own heart broke when she died.
Then I found Steffi. She had been abused by a bunch of young men on a farm. She still fears men to this day, 11 years later. After Digger passed on, I found Kirby at the home of a backyard (!) breeder.
So I have Steffi and Kirby, and I started to look at dogs on the Dachshund Rescue page and on Coast-to-Coast Dachshund Rescue. I have enjoyed basking in their very dachshund-ness. I fell in love with two of them, but neither of them came to my house.
And then I heard about George. Poor little guy--a dappled tweenie whose elderly owner couldn't take care of him any more. Despite Kirby and Steffi and their whiny protestations, I put the wheels in motion to bring George home. He was in Indiana, and we're in upstate New York. Susan in Indiana was incredible in helping me get this little guy here, as was Lisa at the Dachshund Underground Railroad.
George has been with us for a week. He is still very shy, but has made some great progress. He actually rolled over and let me rub his belly! He has become quite attached to my husband, who might resemble George's previous owner (white-haired older "gentleman"). My husband says that it's nice to have a dog that looks forward to his coming home from work the way that the other two look forward to my homecoming!
Thanks to the Dachshund Rescue Web page, I have a new dog. I am trying to take photos to send to you. Stay tuned...
