Unexpected love
We lost our rescued doxie unexpectedly when she was 13. She was a little lethargic when we went to bed that night. I awakened at midnight with the overwhelming urge to check on Pasta and found her dead and stiff as a board. We had her three years and she followed me everywhere, knowing what time it was, she waited patiently at the car every day for me to take her to my noon group meeting and of course slept in my bed. Pasta was owned by my ex-wife of 20 years. I went to Maine for my son's wedding and she slept in my suitcase that first night I was there. My ex had banished her to the garage for two years due to wetting carpets. I would take her home and within a week she was once again housebroken.
After Pasta died I was miserable. I found this website and noticed that just 2 hours away in Knoxville there was a rescue person specializing in doxie's.....
My wife thought it too soon, but I persisted and we called Sandra to find out about some of the wonderful dogs she had. To my amazement she offered to bring three of them for us to meet to our house in Asheville. We did not fit the criteria because we have a stud Labrador and no fence on our 20 acre farm, however Sandra offered to make an exception to the rule and placed CoCo with us. Coco was abandoned and left in a locked vacant house to starve. She weighed about six pounds. Within three days she was hooked on me and it seemed as if Pasta had been reincarnated into Coco. Our noon group now has a new mascot and Coco has fully adapted to our farm life. She follows the tractor as it makes endless rows, she has dug several rats from their hidey holes and killed them graveyard dead, as well as cleaned out several rabbit nests to protect our lettuce crops. She loves to take naps cuddled up to Abe, our choc. Lab and can run as fast as him when it's time to play ball. She replaced our doorbell and is a great greeter to visitors here at the farm, a little shy at first to strangers, but loves to let the small children pet her. She puts a smile on the face of untold folks having a bad day when I take her with me, which is about all the time I go anywhere. When Coco sleeps she has one eye open and focused on me, lest she miss something or a trip away from the farm.
Never in a million years did I think Pasta could be replaced. Thank you more than I could ever say to this wonderful site which made the passing of Pasta so bearable. We will be enjoying Coco for the rest of her days...there is nothing in the world like the love of a good dog. We have been contacted by Sandra again, this time to take in Fred, an aging 11 year old doxie mix. Our previous pack has passed on now, we had all five of our old timers pass in the short span of 10 months. 2010 was a tough year and CoCo had everything to do with getting us through. Things have a way of working out, and we are pleased and in love all over again. You can find us here http://www.jakesfarm.com . I tried to attach a picture, but they are too big and I don't know how to resize them....
